Fishing isn’t quite as simple as it might seem. For every sort of fishing outing – fly and bottom, to name a couple – there is a different set of equipment that will maximize your chance for success. Once you collect the rod and bait that best suits the occasion, it’s time to turn to the smaller details such as fishing line. But don’t be fooled! The line is no less important than any other component of the trip. If you choose a line that is too thin, a bigger fish will snap it in two. If you choose a line that is too thick, certain fish might detect and avoid it. Whatever your need may be, you’ll never go wrong with a Trilene fishing line.

Trilene produces lines of various tints and thicknesses, and each is crafted specifically for a particular type of fishing trip. The Trilene Big Game Spool is ideal when you’re after carp, tuna, or any other large fish. The line is thick enough to withstand the tug of a powerful catch, and is bathed in an anti-abrasion formula that helps protect the line from long bouts of heavy resistance. The Big Game Spool also comes in shades of green (for saltwater) and blue (for freshwater).

The Trilene Sensation line targets smaller fish. The strand’s thinness provides a sensitive touch, allowing the sportsman to easily detect fish nibbles and strikes when the line is in the water. Because it is light, the line also provides you more control of your cast. Unlike the Big Game Spool, this line cannot support large fish. What you gain in controllability and sensitivity, you lose in strength and durability. The Trilene Sensation is at its best when reeling in something comparable to a flounder or trout.

A unique addition to the Trilene catalogue is the Cold Weather Spool, designed especially for winter fishing. The line is fully functional at 32°F, which is ideal for rock fishing and ice fishing. Other lines not designed specifically for this use will wear down and eventually tear under cold water conditions. The Cold Weather Spool comes in a shade of blue designed to disguise itself amidst snow and ice.

While you might be tempted to select the first spool of fishing line you see on the shelf, you should be wary of the product’s features. Some line types could be perfect for one fishing trip but terribly inappropriate for another. It’s important that you know the conditions of the water you’ll be fishing, as well as the kind of fish you’ll be hoping to catch. Choosing your line wisely will go a long way in deciding your success, and by browsing the Trilene fishing line assortment, you’ll be able to find something tailored to your needs.

If a company can lay claim to world records won by their products from every corner of the globe, then you might say they’re doing something right. Consider Rapala fishing lures, founded in Finland, which have caught more record-winning fish than any brand in the world. Rapala’s secret is tried and true: they’ve been crafting high quality, hand carved lures since 1936. Today they call themselves not only the best at their trade, but also the biggest. They sell more lures annually – about 20 million – than any of their competitors. Their knowledge of fish is so vast that over the years, they’ve designed specialized lures for every fishing scenario imaginable. Their catalogue is extensive, and a glance at their bevy of lures can overwhelm a novice fisherman. Each lure has its own unique purpose, and by understanding which one best complements your own style of fishing, you’ll have a better idea of what to buy.

You must first realize that Rapala products are designed for motion; bottom-fishing enthusiasts need not read further. These lures are supposed to “run,” either by trolling or casting. Additionally, they may be divided into three categories, depending on what depth you troll or cast: top running (near water surface), medium diving (up to 10 feet), and deep diving (deeper than 10 feet). Sampling a lure from each category allows you to better understand its purpose.

The Skitter Pop is representative of a top running lure, and should be used when fish appear to be “top feeding” near the water’s surface. It is made for casting, and the fisherman should allow the rig to skim along the waterline, periodically jerking the rod. This motion gives the lure a realistic appearance of a jumping minnow, and attracts the attention of nearby fish. The Skitter Pop is lightweight and has a feathered tail.

The Flat Rap is the most basic medium diving lure. It also mimics the minnow, a small fish that swims at shallow to moderate depths and is preyed on by bigger fish. Different paint schemes tailor to specific fishing environments, but the silver and blue striped model is standard. The barbed hooks at the head and tail of the lure allow for a jerking motion as it pulls through the water, giving the effect of an injured minnow that makes an easy target for bigger fish.

The Magnum is a deep diving lure, and is considered the pride of Rapala. It has snagged the most world record fish of any of the company’s lure designs. This are the heaviest of all, built to withstand the violent strike of a deep-sea fish. It’s weighted in the front and shimmies through murky saltwater, making itself attractable to Tuna and Wahoo.

Researching each of Rapala’s fishing lures will help you decide which is most appropriate for your fishing trip. Once you select a lure from this company, you’ll stand the best chance at snagging a fish. You can’t go wrong with Rapala.

Fly fishing might as well be known as the “sportsman’s art.” Unlike bottom fishing and trolling, there is more to it than memorizing procedures. You can’t simply bait the hook, cast the line, and wait. There’s a technique that isn’t so much learned as it is inherent in the fisherman; some might call it “poetry in motion” with a flick of the wrist and a periodic yank of the arm. And if the technique is pure art, so too is the strategy behind it. A successful trip begins when you select the fly fishing lures – or flies – to tie at the end of your line.

Flies may be classified as imitative or attractive. The names mean exactly what they imply: imitative flies mimic food items found appealing by fish, while attractive flies induce aesthetic impulses with an array of bright colors, textures, and shapes. Aside from this distinction, flies can also be recognized by the manner in which they’re used. Dry flies are meant to be fished at the water’s surface, imitating small insects such as flies and grasshoppers. Emergers should be fished partially underwater, while and wet flies are entirely submerged. The latter two categories represent such things as worms and minnows. Most flies may be used in either freshwater or saltwater.

Flies are generally inexpensive, ranging anywhere from $1-$8 apiece. Most fishing outfitters carry sets or cases of flies that may include dozens of pieces, and this often represents the more economical way to go. Cabela’s offers a multitude of fly kits, from their 84-piece Trout Assortment to their more manageable 12-piece Trophy Trout Assortment. Pricing depends on the level of intricacy; some flies might appear to be assembly line manufactured, while others are handcrafted and hand painted. Cabela’s offers dry flies, emergers, and wet flies.

Orvis is another place to look for flies of all varieties. Most of their dry flies are available for under $2, yet they have the appearance of finely crafted lures. One model – The Royal Wulff – is bathed in brown, white, and red strands and convincingly mimics a mayfly. Meanwhile, one of their wet flies – The Egg Sucking Hornberg – gives the impression of a small feathered insect with orange and red strands interwoven with white and brown speckled feathers. Orvis also offers fly sets classified by fish type, such as the Trout fly set and the Striper fly set. These are quite a bit more expensive than generic fly kits, but they are very comprehensive.

Most outfitters arrange their fly fishing lures according to fish type, making it easy for the inexperienced fisherman to select the most appropriate fly. Before you make a purchase, you’ll need to be informed of the kind of fish you’ll be targeting. Always purchase a few more flies than you think you’ll need, as they often get lost in strong river currents and in the swift bite of a fish.

Carp fishing, a popular sport in England since the 1940’s, has only recently caught on with American outdoorsmen as a worthy endeavor. Owing in part to their indistinct taste when cooked, carp have long been domestically lauded as “trash fish.” The British writer Izakk Walton disagreed; however, calling them “queen of rivers” because of their stateliness and size. Indeed, some of the largest carp can weigh in the neighborhood of 70 or 80 pounds, imposing quite a challenge for even the most seasoned fishermen. Imagine reeling in a fish that weighs more than most dogs, fighting against you all the while with all its might. Such fishing requires heavy duty and specialized gear, so it’s important to get acquainted with the specifics of carp fishing equipment before embarking on your first outing.

Unquestionably, the most critical component to acquiring quality carp equipment is the selection of a fishing rod. Which rod to choose, of course, depends on the breed of carp you are after. You won’t require the same caliber rod to fish a 5 pound carp as you would to fish a giant 50 pounder. But whatever you’re after, you’ll want a rod that is thick but flexible. This is because carp in general is a strong fish that will always test the strength of its catcher and his rod. Carp fishing rods tend to cost more than others because of their need for extra durability. Resistance Tackle, an online fishing outfitter, offer a variety of carp rods, ranging from $40 for their BFS Long Distance Rod to almost $400 for their Grey’s Torison Rod.

While fishing rods might be expensive and hard to come by, bait is not. Carp fishing is unlike fly fishing in that the bait is more about odor than aesthetics. Carp are attracted not by vivid colors or swift motion, but by strong scents. Most fishermen attach boilies or pellets to hooks and let them set still to attract the carp. Boilies are small, round, and quite odorous, and are available in such flavors as blackberry, apricot, and corn. Pellets resemble small rodent feed, and often smell like soybean or sugar. These baits are available for little cost at online carp fishing outfitters such as Royal Carp, Ruby’s Bait, and Cabela’s. In lieu of store-bought bait, you can try various sorts of oily nuts.

Because carp fishing is a relatively new American phenomenon, finding carp fishing equipment can be difficult. Your best bet will be to scour internet sites, such as the ones listed below, for the best quality gear. It might help to keep in mind that many sportsmen substitute catfish equipment – notably rods and bait – when fishing for carp. Catfish and carp are similar in weight and strength, and so is the equipment you’ll need to fish for them. Whatever rod and bait you choose, be ready to tussle with one of the world’s most challenging fish!

A perfect fishing trip entails lots of planning and many ingredients, not the least of which is finding the right equipment to suit your needs. One of the most overlooked fishing accessories is also one of the most important: a fishing tackle bag. When you’re standing on the pier, boat, or shore with a pole in your hand, the last thing you want to worry about is not being able to place your hands on that particular feathered lure at the bottom of a crowded nap sack. If you had only invested in a tackle bag, you’d be able to locate it without any trouble. It’s a smart buy, but there are a number of brands and styles to sort through, and you’ll want to consider your own needs before selecting the bag that is right for you.

For the novice fisherman, a simpler bag will do the trick. Since you won’t have too many lures to keep track of, there’s no need to invest in a complex and intricate brand. Cabela’s offers more than a dozen styles, and their low-priced items are some of the best of the simple variety. Their Quick Stow Boat Utility Bag is small but adequate; the canvas bag is no larger than a lunch pail, and it comes with six compartmentalized plastic boxes for you to store your tackle in. A slightly more pricey option is the Surf Jetty Bag by Open Water, which acts as a shoulder bag and is more sizeable than Cabela’s model. Both bags are lightweight and offer a simplistic layout that makes the search for lures more manageable for the casual fisherman.

Meanwhile, the more seasoned and serious fisherman will likely have a vast collection of lures, and thus a more advanced bag will be in order. WFO Sportfishing recently unveiled the Offshore Bag, a weighty nylon product that allows vast storage space but comes with a hefty price tag. It also includes side storage compartments for fishing tools such as knives and pliers, and it even sports two cup holders on top of the case. 2B-Kayaking’s S2S Fishing Tackle Bag is similar to the WFO brand in cost and in the amount of lure compartment space it provides; however, in lieu of the cup holders, there are four plastic rod-holders on each corner of the bag.

When it comes to fishing tackle bags, you’ll find that there are hundreds of options available. Whether you search online or go to your nearest bait shop or Wal-Mart, you will be inundated with choices. It’s important to remember that, whichever bag you select, it should be the one that caters to your fishing needs. They range in price anywhere from $12 to $200.
